Time to get miserable about the COP28 declaration

14/12/2023 17:25

The UN has set out a pathway to avoiding the very worst effects of climate change. Earlier this week, delegates from around the world ratified a document setting out what we need to do, and when. Even better, the text finally ended the decades-long omerta of never talking about the impact fossil fuels have had on our environment. It’s a landmark moment in history and one that means we can have hope for the future of humanity. Unless, that is, you spend any time examining the substance of the deal to see if the expecta

A24, the celebrated studio behind movies such as Everything Everywhere All At Once and Uncut Gems, is helping to adapt Death Stranding into a live-action film.

The best gaming laptops for 2024

14/12/2023 15:45

Gaming laptops have been some of the most intriguing portable PCs for the past few years. As with most of the best laptops available now, they’ve gotten thinner and lighter, but they’ve also become vastly more powerful and efficient thanks to advanced CPUs and GPUs. They’ve also adopted some bold innovations, like rotating hinges and near desktop-like customizability. Gaming laptops are where PC makers can get adventurous.

If you’re a professional who needs a machine that can help you blaze through work during the 9-5 hours but also make it easy to crush a few rounds of Apex Legends on occasion, a good gaming laptop might be your best bet. You’ll still get plenty of power for video encoding and 3D rendering, plu

Threads’ new hashless tags have opened the door for the silliest form of trolling

14/12/2023 15:23

Last week, Meta finally rolled out searchable tags for all users on Threads, its microblogging Instagram offshoot, and users are taking advantage of a design quirk for a bit of dumb fun. Threads’ “topic tags” are a lot like hashtags, but not entirely the same. For one, there’s no hash (#). They’re also able to contain spaces, meaning the tags can read like normal phrases rather than a bunch of words smashed together, as has long been the norm on Twitter/X and the like. Just like normal hashtags, though, they’ll be highlighted in blue and link out to other posts containing that tag.

It’s pretty basic stuff… which makes the ef

Intel unveils Core Ultra, its first chips with NPUs for AI work

14/12/2023 14:49

Intel today is entering the "AI PC" era with the launch of its new Core Ultra notebook chips. Originally codenamed "Meteor Lake," these are Intels first processors to include an NPU, or neural processing unit, for accelerating AI tasks. The launch comes a week after AMD revealed its upcoming Ryzen 8040 hardware, its second batch of chips to include NPUs. While Intel is playing a bit of AI catch-up, the Core Ultra chips still sound like a solid step forward — at least according to the companys benchmarks.

Intel claims the Core Ultra chips use up to 79 percent less power than AMDs last-gen Ryzen 7840U while idling in Windows, and theyre also up to

The best robot vacuums for 2024

14/12/2023 14:15

Robot vacuums have become ubiquitous thanks to many improvements we’ve seen in the space over the past few years. They’re smarter, more powerful and (marginally) better at avoiding chair legs than they ever were before, and some of them even have built-in mopping functionality and a penchant for pet hair. They’ve also gotten a lot cheaper — make no mistake, these are still some of the priciest gadgets you can buy for your home, but there are more affordable options available today. The space is saturated now with machines from all sorts of companies including iRobot, Shark, Anker and others, so if you need help figuring out where to start looking for the right robot vacuum for you, Engadget has you covered.
